김옥균 (1851-1894)

김옥균은 조선 말기의 정치가, 사상가, 급진개화파이다. 1872년 문과 장원급제 후 여러 요직을 두루 거쳤고, 충의계를 조직해 개화 사상 확산에 힘썼으며, 동남제도개척사 겸 관포경사에 임명돼 울릉도와 독도를 개척했다. 임오군란 후 일본식 급진 개혁을 주장했으나, 양무 운동식 점진적 개혁을 주장하는 외척 민씨 세력에 번번히 발목을 잡히다 못해 갑신정변을 일으켰다.

Kim Okgyun (1851-1894)

Kim Ok-gyun was a reformist activist during the late Joseon Dynasty of Korea. He served under the national civil service under King Gojong, and actively participated to advance Western ideas and sciences in Korea. The goal of the reform movement was to develop Korea in government, technology, and military by using foreign resources, so that Korea would become stable enough in time to withstand increasing foreign encroachment. Kim was assassinated in Shanghai, and later was given the posthumous title "Chungdal".

ⓢ Kim Okgyun's Historic Site / 김옥균 유허지



김옥균 유허지

충남 아산시 영인면 아산리 옛 아산현 소재지 뒷동산에 위치한 김옥균 선생묘소는 충청남도 기념물 제13-1호로 지정되어 있다. 부부합장묘로 일본 동경 아오야마 외인묘지(靑山外人墓地)에서 1914년 9월 11일에 아산으로 이장되었다. 구한말의 정치가이자 개화운동가였던 김옥균의 호는 고균, 시호는 충달공으로 고종 9년(1872) 문과에 장원 급제하여 벼슬은 호조참판에 이르렀으며 1884년 조국 개화를 위해 갑신개혁을 일으켰으나 실패하였다. 빈객이나 사신을 접대하기 위해 조선 태종대(1413년)에 건립되었고 1834년 중건되었다.

갑신정변 (1884.12.4)

갑신정변은 김옥균·박영효·서재필·서광범·홍영식 등 개화당이 청나라에 의존하려는 척족 중심의 수구당을 몰아내고 개화정권을 수립하려 한 무력 정변(쿠데타)이다. 진압 후, 갑신난, 갑신전란으로 불리다가 대한민국 임시 정부에서는 이를 '갑신혁명당의 난'이라 불렀다.

Gapsin Coup (1884.12.4)

The Gapsin Coup was a failed three-day coup d'état that occurred in Korea during 1884. Korean reformers sought to initiate rapid changes within the country, including eliminating social distinctions by abolishing the legal privileges of the yangban class. The coup d'état attempt, with Japanese support, began on December 4, 1884, with seizure the royal palace in Seoul and the killing of several members of the pro-Chinese conservative faction. However, the coup was eventually suppressed by a Chinese garrison stationed in the country, thwarted by the Chinese actions some of the pro-Japanese faction leaders found exile in Japan.
