최무선 (1325-1395)

최무선은 고려 충숙왕 12년(1325년), 지금의 경상북도 영천에서 광흥창사 최동순의 아들로 태어났다. 고려 말 조선 초의 무신이다. 한국 역사상 최초로 화약 개발에 성공하였으며, 이를 통해 왜구 진압에 큰 역할을 했다. 고려 말 조선 초의 문신 정이오가 쓴 《화약고기》는 최무선의 업적을 두고, "나라를 위해 마음을 썼으므로 능히 이원의 기술을 얻었으니 그 사려가 깊고 멀다 하겠다. 지금 왜구가 우리 수군과는 감히 배를 타고 승부를 겨루려 들지 못하는 데는 앞서 진포에서의 싸움과 뒷날의 南海에서의 승전 때문이었다."라고 평가하였다.

Choe Museun (1325-1395)

Choe Mu-Seon was a medieval Korean scientist, inventor, and military commander during the late Goryeo Dynasty and early Joseon Dynasty. He is best known for enabling Korea to domestically produce gunpowder by obtaining a recipe for the Chinese commodity from a Chinese merchant, as well as inventing various gunpowder-based weapons in an attempt to repel the wokou pirates that plundered coastal regions of the Korean Peninsula.
