을미사변 (乙未事變)

사건 당시 서울 현지에서 이를 지휘한 일본측 최고위 인물은 부임한지 37일밖에 안되는 일본공사 미우라였으며, 주요 무력은 서울 주둔의 일본군 수비대이고, 행동대는 일본공사관원, 영사경찰, 신문기자, 낭인배 등이었다. 이들은 미우라의 직접 지시하에 조선의 정궁인 경복궁을 기습하여, 고종의 왕후인 중전 민씨(1897년 명성황후로 추존)를 참혹히 살해하였다. 그리고 시신은 근처의 숲속으로 옮겨 장작더미 위에 올려 놓고 석유를 부어 불태워 버렸다. 그런데 사건의 배후에 대해서는 아직까지도 이견이 분분하다.

Eulmi Incident (1895.10.8)

Empress Myeongseong, known informally as Queen Min, was the first official wife of Gojong, the twenty-sixth king of Joseon and the first emperor of the Korean Empire. The government of Meiji Japan considered Empress Myeongseong an obstacle to its overseas expansion. Efforts to remove her from the political arena, orchestrated through failed rebellions prompted by the father of King Gojong, the Heungseon Daewongun, compelled her to take a harsher stand against Japanese influence.
