장 폴 사르트르 (1905-1980)

장폴 사르트르는 실존주의 사상을 대표하는 프랑스의 작가이자 철학자이다. 그가 왕성하게 활동하던 시기인 1945년부터 1970년대 말까지 프랑스의 지식인들과 정치계에 있어 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 철학서는 물론, 소설, 연극, 영화시나리오, 문학비평, 정치평론 등 다양한 글을 쓴 작가이며, 잡지 '현대Les Temps modernes' (1945)의 창간자이자 편집장이기도 한 사르트르는 1950년대 프랑스 공산당과 매우 가까이 지냈고, 이후로는 레닌주의 사상을 가진 당대 좌파와, 1970년대에는 특히 마오이스트와의 관련성을 띤, 정치 참여적인 문학과 철학 작품들로 유명하다.
