막고굴

둔황 천불동이라고도 하며, 보통 '막고굴'이라는 명칭으로 이 일대의 석굴 전체를 통틀어서 일컫는다. 오호십육국 시대인 전진(前秦) 시대부터 원나라 시대에 걸쳐 1천여 년 세월 동안 세워지고 만들어진 동굴, 유물이 많이 모여있는 불교 유적이다. 동굴 735개, 벽화 총 연장길이 45 km, 각종 불상 2415좌가 있는 거대한 유적으로, 현존하는 유적 중 세계에서 규모가 가장 크고, 유물도 가장 풍부한 불교 미술 유적으로 1987년 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등록됐다.
