동구릉

1408년 조선왕조를 세운 태조 이성계 승하하자 태조의 명으로 파주, 고양 등지에서 좋은 뮛자리를 물색하여 능지로 정해진 곳이다. 동구릉은 조선왕조 전 시기에 걸쳐 이루어졌다. 동구릉이라고 부른 것은 순조의 아들 문조의 능인 수릉이 아홉 번째로 조성되었던 1855년(철종6) 이후의 일이며, 그 이전에는 동오릉(東五陵), 동칠릉(東七陵)이라고 불렀다. 동구릉은 조선 왕조 500년 능제 변화를 한 눈에 볼 수 있는 세계문화유산이며, 능 전역에 우거진 숲과 능역을 가로지르는 개울등 자연이 빼어나 시민들의 휴식처로 각광받고 있다.

Donggureung

Donggureung Tombs are located in a large forest area, and they are the resting place of Joseon's kings and queens. There are nine royal mausoleums and seventeen graves in total. The tombs are very large compared to other tombs in Korea, and the surrounding forest adds to the scenery. The nine royal mausoleums include the tomb of Joseon Dynasty’s founder King Taejo (1335-1408), which is called Geonwolleung.

ⓟ Taejo (Yi Seong-gye,1335-1408) / 태조 이성계



태조 이성계 (1335-1408)

건원릉은 조선 1대 태조의 능으로, 조선 왕릉 제도의 표본이라고 할 수 있다. 기본적으로는 고려 공민왕의 현릉 양식을 따르고 있으나, 고려 왕릉에는 없던 곡장을 봉분 주위에 두르는 등 세부적으로 석물의 조형과 배치 면에서 일정한 변화를 보여주고 있다. 봉분에는 다른 왕릉처럼 잔디가 아닌 억새풀을 덮었는데, 『인조실록』에 태조의 유교에 따라 청완(靑薍, 억새)을 덮었다는 기록이 있다.

Taejo (Yi Seong-gye,1335-1408)

The tomb of his Umbilical cord is in Man-In-san, Geumsan-gun, South Chungcheong Province in the Republic of Korea. Despite the fact that he overthrew the kingdom of Goryeo, and purged officials who remained loyal to the old regime, many regard him as a revolutionary and a decisive ruler who deposed the inept, obsolete and crippled governing system to save the nation from many foreign forces and conflicts.

ⓟ Munjong (1414-1452) / 문종



문종 (1414-1452)

현릉은 조선 5대 문종과 현덕왕후 권씨의 능이다. 현릉은 같은 능역에 하나의 정자각을 두고 서로 다른 언덕에 능침을 조성한 동원이강릉(同原異岡陵)의 형태이다. 정자각 앞에서 바라보았을 때 왼쪽 언덕(서쪽)이 문종, 오른쪽 언덕(동쪽)이 현덕왕후의 능이다.

Munjong (1414-1452)

Munjong of Joseon was the fifth King of the Joseon Dynasty, who ruled Korea from 1450 to 1452. He was the eldest son of King Sejong and succeeded him in 1450, but died of disease two years later. He was succeeded by his son, Danjong of Joseon.

ⓟ Seonjo (1552-1608) / 선조



선조 (1552-1608)

목릉은 조선 14대 선조와 첫 번째 왕비 의인왕후 박씨와 두 번째 왕비 인목왕후 김씨의 능이다. 목릉은 같은 능역 안에 각각 다른 언덕에 능침을 조성한 동원이강릉(同原異岡陵)의 형식이다. 정자각 앞에서 바라보았을 때 왼쪽 언덕이 선조, 가운데 언덕이 의인왕후, 오른쪽 언덕이 인목왕후의 능이다. 선조의 능은 기본적인 왕릉상설에 맞게 조성되어 병풍석과 난간석, 혼유석, 망주석, 석양 및 석호가 배치되어 있다.

Seonjo (1552-1608)

Seonjo of Joseon ruled Korea from 1567 to 1608. He was the fourteenth king of the Joseon Dynasty. He is known for encouraging Confucianism and renovating state affairs at the beginning of his reign, although political chaos and his incompetent leadership during the Japanese invasions of Korea marred his later years.

ⓟ Hyeonjong (1641-1674) / 현종



현종 (1641-1674)

1674년(현종 15)에 현종이 세상을 떠나, 현재의 자리에 능을 조성하였다. 숭릉을 조성할 때 8도의 승군 2,650명을 징발하여 능을 공사하였다. 숭릉의 혈을 파기 위해 겉흙을 걷어냈을 때 부도를 세우려 했던 흔적이 나왔으나, 깊이가 3척밖에 되지 않아 지맥을 손상하지 않았을 뿐 아니라 또한 광중 밖이기 때문에 그대로 진행하였다. 숭릉 조성 후 9년이 지난 1683년(숙종 9)에 명성왕후 김씨가 세상을 떠나, 그 다음 해 숭릉에 쌍릉으로 능을 조성하였다.

Hyeonjong (1641-1674)

Hyeonjong was born in 1641 as the first son of King Hyojong as Yi Yeon, while his father was still in China as captive of Manchu Qing Dynasty; thus he was born at Shenyang, the Manchu capital before Qing Dynasty officially move its capital to Beijing after defeating Ming Dynasty in 1644. He returned to Korea in 1645 along with his father and became Crown Prince in 1651.

ⓟ Yeongjo (1694-1776) / 영조



영조 (1694-1776)

원릉은 조선 21대 영조와 두 번째 왕비 정순왕후 김씨의 능이다. 쌍릉의 형태이며 정자각 앞에서 바라보았을 때 왼쪽(서쪽)이 영조, 오른쪽(동쪽)이 정순왕후의 능이다. 능침은 병풍석을 생략하고 난간석만 둘렀으며, 왕과 왕비의 능 앞에 각각 혼유석 1좌씩 배치되었다.

Yeongjo (1694-1776)

Yeongjo of Joseon was the 21st king of the Korean Joseon Dynasty. He was the second son of King Sukjong. His mother was Consort Suk of the Choi clan. Before ascending to power, his name was Prince Yeoning. In 1720, a few months after the accession of his older brother, King Gyeongjong as the 20th King, Yeoning became the Royal Prince Successor Brother. This induced a large controversy between political factions. Nevertheless, four years later, at the death of Gyeongjong, Yeongjo ascended the throne.

ⓟ Heonjong (1827-1849) / 헌종



헌종 (1827-1849)

경릉은 조선 24대 헌종성황제와 첫 번째 왕비 효현성황후 김씨와 두 번째 왕비 효정성황후 홍씨의 능이다. 경릉은 세 개의 봉분을 나란히 조성한 삼연릉(三連陵)의 형태로 조선왕릉 중 유일하다. 정자각 앞쪽에서 바라보았을 때 왼쪽이 헌종, 가운데가 효현성황후, 오른쪽이 효정성황후의 능이다.

Heonjong (1827-1849)

Heonjong of Joseon was the 24th king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. He was the grandson of Sunjo. His father was Crown Prince Hyomyeong (posthumously named Ikjong), who died at the age of 20 before becoming king and his mother was Queen Sinjeong of the Pungyang Jo clan. Heonjong was born three-years before Hyomyeong's death.
