1968년 하계 올림픽

1968년 하계 올림픽은 1968년 10월 12일부터 10월 27일까지 멕시코 멕시코시티에서 개최된 제19회 하계 올림픽이다. 개막일 열흘 전에 500명의 학생들이 멕시코 경찰에게 숨진 틀라텔로코 참사 사건이 발생하였다. 미국의 흑인 육상 선수들이 인종차별에 대항하며 블랙파워 시위(Black Power salute)를 벌였다. 200m에서 1위와 3위로 들어온 토미 스미스와 존 칼로스는 메달 시상식에서 목에 검은 스카프를 두르고 신발 없이 검은 양말만 신은 채 시상대에 올랐고 미국 국가가 울리자 검은 장갑을 낀 오른손을 높게 들었다.

1968 Summer Olympics

These were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Latin America and the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country. They were the first Games to use an all-weather (smooth) track for track and field events instead of the traditional cinder track. The 1968 Games were the third to be held in the last quarter of the year, after the 1956 Games in Melbourne and the 1964 Games in Tokyo. The Mexican Student Movement of 1968 happened concurrently and the Olympic Games were correlated to the government's repression.
