야쿠시지 (약사사)

680년, 덴무 천황이 황후의 병이 낫기를 기원하며 건립을 발원한 고사찰. 창건 당시에는 아스카에 위치했으나 헤이조 천도에 따라 현재의 장소로 이전되었다. 16세기에 전쟁 등으로 동탑을 제외하고 창건 당시의 건물을 잃었으나 1960년대부터 시작된 가람 부흥 사업에 따라 중심 가람을 왕년의 하쿠호 양식으로 복원하였다. 하쿠호 시대의 화려한 문화를 현대에 전하는 산뜻한 색채의 건물들이 아름답다. 승려들이 수학여행으로 이곳을 찾은 학생들에게 독특한 설법을 전파하는 것으로도 유명하다. 1998년 12월에 ‘고도 나라의 문화재’로서 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등재되었다.
