Museum of the Sino-Japanese War

The Museum of the Sino-Japanese War 1894-1895 is a national museum founded in 1985 to memorize the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). It is located on Liugong Island, the former office site of Beiyang Navy of the late Qing Dynasty (1964-1911). Liugong Island was designated as a key protection site of cultural relics by the State Council in 1988. The museum is a special agency that protects and manages the 28 historic sites on the island.

황해해전 (갑오전쟁, 청일전쟁 1894.9.17)

황해해전(黄海海戦)은 1894년 9월 17일 청일 전쟁 중기 일본해군 연합함대와 청나라 북양함대 사이에 벌어진 해전으로 압록강 해전으로도 불린다. 근대적인 장갑함이 실전에 투입된 최초의 전투로 알려져 있으며 이 해전의 결과, 청나라 해군은 큰 손실을 입고 제해권을 상실하여 무력화 된다.

Battle of the Yalu River (1894.9.17)

The Battle of the Yalu River was the largest naval engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War, and took place on 17 September 1894, the day after the Japanese victory at the land Battle of Pyongyang. It involved ships from the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Chinese Beiyang Fleet. The battle is also known by a variety of names: Battle of Haiyang Island, Battle of Dadonggou, Battle of the Yellow Sea and Battle of Yalu, after the geographic location of the battle, which was in the Yellow Sea off the mouth of the Yalu River and not in the river itself.

등세창 (邓世昌 1849-1894)

등세창은 청나라 후기의 해군 군인 겸 장군(제독)으로 정여창과 함께 북양함대를 이끈 사람이었다. 1867년 푸젠 해군군관학교에 입학하여 이듬해 1868년 졸업하고 1874년 장군 지위에 올랐으며 1887년 어뢰순양함 치원의 선장(청 제국 수군 2성 장군 계급 신분)이 되었으나 1894년 9월 17일 청일 전쟁 당시 황해 해전에서 전사했다. 사후 1996년 인민해방군 해군이 그를 기려 해군 전함을 건조했다.

Deng Shichang (1849-1894)

Deng Shichang, courtesy name Zhengqing, posthumous name Zhuangjie, was a Chinese military officer who lived in the late Qing dynasty. He is best known for his service in the Beiyang Fleet during the First Sino-Japanese War as the captain of the protected cruiser Zhiyuan. He participated in the Battle of the Yalu River on 17 September 1894 against the Imperial Japanese Navy. After Zhiyuan was sunk in battle, he refused to be rescued and eventually went down with his ship. He was posthumously awarded the position of taizi shaobao by the Qing government and honoured as a hero in the Shrine of Loyalty in Beijing.
