마틴 루터 킹 주니어 (1929-1968)

마틴 루터 킹 주니어는 미국의 침례교 목사이자 인권 운동가, 흑인 해방 운동가, 권리 신장 운동가, 기독교 평화주의자로, 미국내 흑인의 인권 운동을 이끈 개신교 목사들 가운데 한 사람으로 꼽힌다. 1964년 노벨 평화상을 받았다. 1955년 12월 몽고메리 시립 공영 버스의 흑인 좌석차별 사건 이후, 버스 보이콧 운동을 비폭력 평화 시위로 이끌어 1년 만에 범국민적 지지를 얻어 승리를 거두었고, 이후 흑인 해방 운동 및 흑인 인권 운동을 주도했다. 이후 1963년의 워싱턴 대행진을 비롯한 많은 흑인 관련 운동과 인권 운동을 이끌어 법률과 제도의 수정, 공민권법, 투표권법의 개정과 흑인의 권리를 증진했다.

King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, tactics his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi helped inspire.
