남초호수

남초호는 중국 티베트 자치구 라싸의 당슝현과 나취 지구의 반거현 사이에 있는 호수이다. ‘남초’는 ‘하늘의 호수’라는 뜻으로, 남쵸 또는 나무초 소금호라고도 한다. 해발 4,718m에 위치하여 세계에서 4번째로 높은 곳에 있는 염호이다. 1,920 km2 표면적을 가지고 있으며, 티베트 자치구 내에서는 가장 큰 호수이지만, 티베트고원에서 가장 큰 호수는 칭하이호로 남초호의 2배 크기를 가진다.

Namtso

Namtso is a lake that first formed during the Paleogene age, as a result of Himalayan tectonic plate movements. The lake lies at an elevation of 4,718 m, and has a surface area of 1,900 km2. This salt lake is the largest lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. However, it is not the largest lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. That title belongs to Qinghai Lake (more than twice the size of Namtso); which lies more than 1,000 km to the north-east in Qinghai.
