알다브라섬

알다브라섬은 세이셸 남서부 인도양에 위치한 세계 최대 규모의 산호 환초 가운데 하나로, 뛰어난 자연환경과 독특한 생태계를 간직한 섬이다. 섬에는 세계에서 가장 큰 야생 개체군인 약 10만 마리 이상의 알다브라자이언트거북이 서식하고 있으며, 이 밖에도 다양한 희귀 조류와 해양생물, 고유 식물이 살아가는 생물다양성의 보고로 알려져 있다. 사람의 개발이 거의 이루어지지 않아 원시적인 자연환경이 잘 보존되어 있으며, 광활한 석호와 맹그로브 숲, 산호초가 어우러진 아름다운 경관을 자랑한다. 이러한 뛰어난 생태적 가치를 인정받아 알다브라 환초는 1982년 유네스코 세계자연유산에 등재되었으며, 갈라파고스 제도와 함께 세계에서 가장 중요한 자연보호구역 가운데 하나로 평가받고 있다.

Aldabra Atoll

The atoll is comprised of four large coral islands which enclose a shallow lagoon; the group of islands is itself surrounded by a coral reef. Due to difficulties of access and the atoll's isolation, Aldabra has been protected from human influence and thus retains some 152,000 giant tortoises, the world's largest population of this reptile.
