아시아코끼리

아시아코끼리는 코끼리의 일종으로 아시아코끼리속(Elephas)에 속한 종 중 현존하는 유일한 종이다. 아시아의 인도·네팔·방글라데시·스리랑카·인도차이나 반도·인도네시아 군도 등지에 서식한다. 중국의 일부 남부 지방에서도 서식하나 이들은 모두 중국코끼리가 아닌 인도코끼리들이다.

Asian elephant

The Asian elephant, or Asiatic elephant (Elephas maximus), is the only living species of the genus Elephas and is distributed in Southeast Asia, from India and Nepal in the west to Borneo in the south. Three subspecies are recognised—E. m. maximus from Sri Lanka, E. m. indicus from mainland Asia and E. m. sumatranus from the island of Sumatra.
