크리스토퍼 콜럼버스는 이탈리아 제노바 출신의 탐험가이자 항해가이다. 콜럼버스는 죽을 때까지(1506년) 자기가 발견한 땅을 인도라고 믿었는데, 그의 서회 항로 개척으로 인하여 아메리카 대륙이 비로소 유럽인의 활동 무대가 되었고, 현재의 미국(United States of America)이 탄생할 수 있었던 근본적인 토대가 생길 수 있었다는 점에서 중요한 역사적 의의를 지니고 있다.
