퇴계 이황 (1502-1571)

이언적의 사상을 이어받아 영남학파의 중추적 학자가 되었으며 나아가 한국을 대표하는 성리학자가 되었다. 학맥은 동서 분당 뒤에 동인의 핵심을 이루고, 다시 동인이 남인-북인으로 갈릴 때, 이황 제자들은 남인, 조식 제자들은 북인을 이룬다. 한편 그의 저술 중 일부는 임진왜란 당시 일본군이 약탈해갔는데, 일본 성리학 발전에 영향을 주기도 하였다.

Yi Hwang (1502-1571)

Yi Hwang is one of the two most prominent Korean Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty, the other being his younger contemporary Yi I (Yulgok). A key figure of the Neo-Confucian literati, he established the Yeongnam School and set up the Dosan Seowon, a private Confucian academy. Yi Hwang is often referred to by his pen name Toegye ("Retreating Creek"). His courtesy name was Gyeongho.
