논개 (1574-1593)

논개 또는 주논개는 조선 선조 시대의 열녀이다. 충절을 기려 의암이라고 한다. 그녀는 재주와 지혜가 뛰어나고 시문에 능하였다. 임진왜란 당시 제2차 진주성 전투에서 왜장과 함께 남강에 투신하였다. 최경회가 경상우도 병마절도사로 임명되어 동행하였으나, 진주성이 함락되고 최경회가 순국하자 논개는 왜장들이 촉석루에서 연회를 벌이고 있을 때 왜장 게야무라 로쿠스케를 유인하여 남강(南江)에 투신하여 순절 하였다.

Nongae (1574-1593)

In 1592, Japanese forces invaded the Korean peninsula in the Imjin war, during which Official Choi, Nongae's husband, was assassinated. Afterwards, the Japanese eventually succeeded in their invasion of Suyeong Fortress (now near Jinju area). To celebrate the victory, soldiers forced all the kisaeng, female entertainers, to serve them at the Chokseongnu Pavilion on a cliff that overlooked the Nam River.
