정약용 (1762-1836)

정약용은 조선 후기의 대표적인 실학자이자 사상가로 실학을 바탕으로 백성의 삶을 개선하고 나라를 바로 세우려 한 실천적 지식인이다. 정약용은 28세에 과거에 급제했고 정조의 신임을 받아 규장각 검서관으로 일하면서 정조의 개혁정치를 학문적으로 뒷받침하며 수원화성 건설에도 참여했는데, 이때 거중기라는 기계를 고안해 돌을 들어 올리는 데 활용하게 했다. 그는 정치, 경제, 법, 과학, 철학 등 다양한 분야에 관심을 가졌으며, 현실 문제를 해결하려는 학문을 중시했다. 특히 백성의 고통을 덜고자 한 그의 사상은 "백성을 근본으로 삼는 정치"로 대표된다. 1801년 신유박해 때 천주교 신앙과 관련되었다는 이유로 유배를 당해 전라도 강진에서 약 18년 동안 지냈면서 학문 연구를 멈추지 않고 수많은 저서를 남겼다. 대표적인 저서로는 정치 개혁서 <목민심서>, 행정 제도서 <경세유표>, 형벌 제도서 <흠흠신서> 등이 있다.

Jeong Yakyong (1762-1836)

Jeong Yakyong, often simply known as ‘Dasan’, was one of the greatest thinkers of the later Joseon period, wrote highly influential books about philosophy, science and theories of government, held significant administrative positions, was a close confidant of King Jeongjo, and was noted as a poet. His philosophical position is often identified with the Silhak  school, and his concerns are better seen as explorations of Neo-Confucian themes. He spent 18 years in exile in Gangjin, South Jeolla province, from 1801 until 1818, on account of his membership of the Southerners faction, and also because of the Catholic faith of his elder brother.

다산초당

강진만이 한눈에 굽어보이는 만덕산 기슭에 자리한 다산초당은 조선시대 후기 실학을 집대성한 대학자 정약용선생이 유배생활을 했던 곳이다. 다산(茶山)이라는 호는 강진 귤동 뒷산 이름으로 이 기슭에 머물고 계시면서 자신의 호로 써 왔다. 조선후기 대표적 실학자인 다산선생이 1801년 강진에 유배되어 18년여 동안 적거생활하시는 동안『목민심서』『경세유표』등 600여권의 방대한 책을 저술하면서 조선시대 성리학의 공리 공론적이며 관념론적인 학풍을 실용적인 과학사상으로 이끌고자 하는 실사구시의 실학을 집대성한 곳이다.

House of Dasan

Dasan Chodang is the house where Jeong Yak-yong (pen-name Dasan, 1762-1836) lived during his exile. He was a scholar of the late Joseon Dynasty and is noted for his great contributions to the development of practical learning in Korea. After he was expelled to Ganjin for writing a secret letter of appeal for religious freedom, which later was named ‘the Hwang Sa-yeong Baekseo’, he lived in the house for 18 years while studying practical learning (‘Silhak’ in Korean).
