항우 (BC.232-202)

항우는 중국 진나라 말기의 군인이자, 초한전쟁 때 초나라의 군주이다. 초나라의 명장 항연의 후손으로, 처음에는 숙부 항량을 따르며 진왕 자영을 폐위시켜 주살한 후로 서초 패왕에 즉위함으로써 왕이 되었고, 초 의제를 섭정으로 도와 통치했으나, 그를 암살했다. 뒷날 유방의 도전으로 초한의 끝없는 싸움을 싸우다 패하고 스스로 목숨을 끊었다. 그의 죽음은 중국 위진남북조 시대 이후 문학의 소재로 활용되기 시작했고, 원나라 이후 희극의 주인공으로도 등장하였으며, 고려시대 이후의 문학에도 등장한다.

Xiang Yu (BC.232-202)

Xiang Yu, born Xiang Ji, was the Ba Wang or Hegemon-King of Western Chu during the Chu–Han Contention period of China. A noble of Xiaxiang, Xiang Yu rebelled against the Qin dynasty and became a prominent warlord. He was granted the title of "Duke of Lu" by King Huai II of the restoring Chu state in 208 BC. The following year, he led the Chu forces to victory at the Battle of Julu against the Qin armies led by Zhang Han. After the fall of Qin, Xiang Yu was enthroned as the "Hegemon-King of Western Chu" and ruled a vast area of land covering parts of present-day Shanxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangsu, with Pengcheng as his capital.
