이븐 바투타는 중세 아랍의 여행가, 탐험가이자 유명한 여행기의 저자이다. 이븐 바투타의 여행기는 당대 거의 대부분 이슬람 국가와 중국, 수마트라에 이르기까지 12만km에 달하는 광범위한 여정을 묘사한 것으로 문화 인류학적 가치가 크다.

Ibn Battuta (1304-1369)
Ibn Battuta, was a Berber Maghrebi scholar and explorer who travelled extensively in the lands of Afro-Eurasia, largely in the Muslim world. He travelled more than any other explorer in pre-modern history, totalling around 117,000 km, surpassing Zheng He with about 50,000 km and Marco Polo with 24,000 km Over a period of thirty years, Ibn Battuta visited most of southern Eurasia, including Central Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, China, and the Iberian Peninsula. Near the end of his life, he dictated an account of his journeys, titled A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling, but commonly known as The Rihla.
