근초고왕 (?-375)

근초고왕은 마한 54개 연맹체 중 하나였던 백제국이 차츰 부족국가로서의 면모를 갖출 무렵 비류왕의 둘째 아들로 태어났다. 어려서부터 체격이 컸기 때문에, 둘째 아들임에도 346년 계왕의 뒤를 이어 왕위에 올랐다. 근초고왕은 남으로 전라도 지역까지 마한 연맹체를 부분적으로 통일하였고, 북으로는 평양성을 공격하여 371년 고구려의 고국원왕을 전사시켰다.

Geunchogo of Baekje (?-375)

Under Geunchogo, the kingdom reached its greatest geographic extent and political power. The remaining tribes of Mahan were annexed in 369, completing Baekje's control over all of present-day Jeolla-do. Gaya confederacy states west of the Nakdong River were also made Baekje dependencies. In 369, Baekje was invaded by Goguryeo, but counterattacked in force at the Battle of Chiyang. In 371, the Baekje army of 30,000, led by Crown Prince Geungusu, took the fortress of Pyongyang and killed Gogugwon of Goguryeo.
