센소지 (浅草寺)

센소지는 도쿄 아사쿠사에 있는 도쿄에서 가장 오래된 불교 사원이자 도시를 대표하는 역사적·문화적 명소다. 센소지는 628년에 창건된 것으로 알려져 있는데 전설에 따르면 스미다강에서 고기를 잡던 백제계 어부 형제가 그물에 걸린 성관세음보살상을 발견했고, 이 불상을 모시기 위해 사당을 지은 것이 센소지의 시초가 되었다고 한다. 오랜 역사를 거치며 관동 대지진과 제2차 세계 대전 당시 도쿄 대공습 등으로 인해 건물 대부분이 소실되고 현재의 본당과 주요 건물들은 1960년대 이후 재건된 것이다. 특히 입구의 카미나리몬(천둥문)과 그 앞을 따라 늘어선 나카미세 거리(상점가), 그리고 5층 탑과 본당 등이 유명하며, 매년 수천만 명의 방문객이 찾는 세계 최대 규모의 종교 유적 중 하나다.

Sensoji

The temple is dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. According to legend, a statue of the Kannon was found in the Sumida River in 628 B.C. by two fishermen, the brothers Hinokuma Hamanari and Hinokuma Takenari. The chief of their village, Hajino Nakamoto, recognized the sanctity of the statue and enshrined it by remodeling his own house into a small temple in Asakusa so that the villagers could worship Kannon. The first temple was founded in 645 AD, which makes it the oldest temple in Tokyo. In the early years of the Tokugawa shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Sensō-ji as tutelary temple of the Tokugawa clan.
