서재필 (1864-1951)

서재필은 김옥균, 홍영식, 윤치호, 박영효 등과 갑신정변을 일으켰으나 3일천하로 끝났다. 그는 일본을 경유, 미국으로 망명하여 1890년 6월 10일 한국인 최초의 미국 시민권자가 되었다. 1895년 김홍집 내각에서 중추원 고문으로 초빙되어 귀국하였다. 1896년 4월 7일 한국 최초의 민간 신문인 '독립신문'을 발간하였고 그해 7월 독립 협회를 설립했다. 이후 독립협회를 통해 토론회와 강연회, 상소 활동, 집회 및 시위 등을 주도했고, 민주주의와 참정권'을 소개하고, 신문물 견학을 위한 외국 유학의 중요성을 역설했다.

Soh Jaipil

He was one of the organizers of the Gapsin Coup in 1884 as well as the 1896 to 1898 civil rights movement and other suffrage movements. However, when the Gapsin Coup failed, he took refuge in the United States, where he became a medical doctor. During his time in the United States he became the first Korean to gain American citizenship.
