제주 해녀

제주도의 여성 공동체에는 최고령이 80대에 이르는 여성들이 생계를 위해 산소마스크를 착용하지 않고 수심 10m까지 잠수하여 전복이나 성게 등 조개류를 채취하는 해녀(海女)가 있다. 바다와 해산물에 대해서 잘 아는 제주 해녀들은 한번 잠수할 때마다 1분간 숨을 참으며 하루에 최대 7시간까지, 연간 90일 정도 물질을 한다. 해녀들은 물속에서 다시 수면 위로 떠오를 때 독특한 휘파람 소리를 낸다. 해녀들은 저마다의 물질 능력에 따라 하군, 중군, 상군의 세 집단으로 분류되며 상군 해녀들이 나머지 해녀들을 지도한다.

Jeju Haenyeo

In Jeju Island, there is a community of women, some aged in their 80s, which goes diving 10m under the sea to gather shellfish, such as abalone or sea urchins for a living without the help of oxygen masks. With knowledge of the sea and marine life, the Jeju haenyeo (female divers) harvest for up to seven hours a day, 90 days of the year holding their breath for just one minute for every dive and making a unique verbal sound when resurfacing.
