제주 4·3 사건

제주 4·3 사건은 1947년 3월 1일 경찰의 발포사건을 기점으로 하여 1948년 4월 3일 발생한 봉기로부터 1954년 9월 21일까지 제주도에서 발생한 무력 충돌과 진압 과정에서 민간인들이 희생당한 사건이다. 이 사건은 《제주 4.3사건 진상규명 및 희생자 명예회복에 관한 특별법》에 규정되어 있다.

Jeju uprising

From April 1948 to May 1949, the Korean province of Jeju Island was subjected to a communist insurgency and subsequent anticommunist suppression campaign, during which between 14,000 and 30,000 people were killed. The proximate cause of the rebellion was the scheduling of elections for May 10, 1948, by the United Nations Temporary Commission on Korea (UNTCOK) in the hope of creating a new government for all of Korea.
