신채호 (1880-1936)

신채호는 일제강점기 <조선상고사>, <조선상고문화사>, <조선사연구초> 등을 저술한 학자이며, 언론인·독립운동가이다. <황성신문> 기자, <대한매일신보> 주필로서 항일언론운동을 벌이며 신민회와 국채보상운동에 참여했고 1910년 중국으로 망명했다. 항일을 고취하는 글과 역사서를 집필하면서 대한독립청년단 조직, 임시정부 수립에 참여했다. 1922년 이후에는 폭력을 통한 민중 직접혁명을 주장하여 무정부주의자의 길을 걸었다. 1928년 대만에서 체포, 여순 감옥에서 복역 중 순국했다.

Sin Chaeho (1880-1936)

Sin Chaeho was a Korean independence activist, historian, anarchist, nationalist, and a founder of Korean ethnic nationalist historiography. He is held in high esteem in both North and South Korea. Two of his works, A New Reading of History (Doksa Sillon), written in 1908, and The Early History of Joseon, published in 1931, are considered key works of nationalist historiography in modern Korea.
