주세페 가리발디 (1807-1882)

주세페 가리발디는 이탈리아의 혁명가, 군인, 정치가이다. 정치가로서의 식견은 부족했으나, 용감하여 애국자로서 국민들의 존경을 받았다. 이탈리아 통일 운동에서 중요한 역할을 한 인물로 꼽힌다. 그는 1859년 해방 전쟁에서 알프스 의용대를 조직하였고, 이듬해 5월에는 "붉은 셔츠대"를 조직하여 양시칠리아 왕국을 한 사람의 손실도 없이 정복하였다. 1860년 다시 진군하여 칼라브리아와 나폴리 지방을 점령하고 이것을 점령한 뒤, 사르데냐의 왕인 비토리오 에마누엘레 2세에게 바침으로써 이탈리아 통일에 기여하였다.

Giuseppe Garibaldi

Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian general and nationalist. A republican, he contributed to the Italian unification and the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. One book describes him as one of the greatest generals of modern times and one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland" along with Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, Victor Emmanuel II of Italy and Giuseppe Mazzini.
