사명대사 (유정, 1544-1610)

1544년 경상도 밀양에서 태어나 일찍이 부모님을 여의고 김천 직지사로 출가하여 승려가 되었고, 서산대사의 제자로 불교의 깊은 이치를 배우고 수행했다. 임진왜란이 일어나자, 스승 서산대사의 명을 받아 의승군을 조직하고 각지에서 승병을 이끌며 전투에 참여했다. 특히 그는 금산, 해남, 묘향산 등지에서 승병을 지휘하며 조선군과 협력해 일본군을 격퇴하는 데 큰 공을 세웠다. 전쟁이 끝난 뒤 1604년에는 조선 정부의 명을 받아 일본으로 외교 사절로 파견되어, 도쿠가와 이에야스를 만나 전쟁 중 포로로 끌려간 조선인 약 3천여 명을 귀국하였다.

Samyeongdang (Yujeong, 1544-1610)

In 1561, he passed the seon-gwa, the specialized gwageo for Buddhist monks. He corresponded with various scholars of the time including Pak Saam, Heo Hagok, and Im Baekho. In 1575, he was recommended as head of the Seon order, but refused and instead traveled to Myohyangsan. There he was instructed by preceptor Hyujeong.

사명대사 생가지

사명대사가 1544년(중종 30)에 진사 임수성의 둘째 아들로 태어나 13세 때 가출하여 직지사 신묵에게 가서 승려가 될 때까지 어린시절을 보낸 곳이다. 현재 사당인 숙청사와 사명대사가 태어나서 자란곳인 육영당, 사명대사가 거처하던 사랑채인 사명당 등이 남아있다. 또한 사명당이 이따금씩 고향으로 돌아올때 쉬었다는 바위가 아직 그대로 남아 있어, 그의 발자취를 엿볼 수 있고 그의 생을 음미해 볼 수 있는 곳이다. 마을 뒷산 서쪽 기슭에 사명대사의 조모와 부모의 묘소가 있다.

Birthplace of Samyeong daesa

This is the where the Grand Master Samyeong, a Buddhist monk from late Joseon Dynasty, was born. The master was born as the second son of Lim Su-seong in 1544, and left his house at age thirteen to stay at Jikjisa Temple until he became a Buddhist monk. The complex currently consists of Sukcheongsa, a shrine, Yukyeongdang, where the master was born and raised, and Samyeongdang, a building where the master spent time meditating and studying. The complex was designated as Gyeongsangnam-do Heritage No. 116 in 1992.
