신숙주 (1417-1475)

신숙주는 조선 전기의 성리학자·문신·정치가이며 언어학자, 외교관이다. 1438년(세종 20년) 생원, 진사시에 모두 합격하고 1439년(세종 21년) 친시문과에 급제하여 세종 때 집현전의 학사로서 성삼문, 박팽년, 정인지 등과 함께 훈민정음의 창제와 연구에 기여하였다.

Sin Sukju (1417-1475)

Sin Suk-ju was a Korean politician during the Joseon Dynasty.  Shin was an accomplished polyglot, and was particularly well educated in the Chinese language. He served as a personal linguistic expert to King Sejong, and was intimately involved in the creation and application of the Korean alphabet known in modern times as Hangul. Sin used the newly created hangul system to create an accurate transcription of spoken Mandarin Chinese in 15th century Ming dynasty China. These transcriptions haven proven accurate and reliable, and his transcriptions are now "an invaluable source of information on the pronunciations of Ming-era."
