치온인 (지은원, 知恩院)

지은원은 정토종의 총본산으로 1175년 승려 호넨이 요시미즈의 땅에 초가 암자을 세운 것이 기원이다. 호넨은 정토종의 개조로 "나무아미타불."을 열심히 외움으로써 모든 사람들이 구제된다는 전수염불를 넓혔다. 호넨 사망 후, 제자 미나모토노 사토시를 초가암자가 있던 땅에 기초를 만들어 에도막부를 연 초대장군 도쿠가와 이에야스, 2대 장군 히데타다, 3대 장군 이에미츠들에 의해 장대한 가람이 형성됐다. 경내에는 국보 미에이도과 삼문, 중요문화재 세이시도, 집회도(호넨 상인어당) 등이 줄지어 있다.

Chionin

Chionin is the headquarters of the Jodo sect of Buddhism and built in 1294 by the Priest Genchi on the site where the founder Honen (1133-1212) first preached and later fasted to death. Chionin's re-construction in 1633 was financed by the Tokugawa shogunate and the colossal scale of the project is a proclamation of Tokugawa power and the supremacy of the Jodo sect. Followers of Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism seek to be reborn in Jodo (Pure Land) or the Western Paradise of Amitabha and their Namu-Amida-Butsu prayer-formula is their most well known characteristic.
