1974년 완공된 당시 세계 최고층 빌딩이었던 윌리스 타워(Willis Tower)는 높이 442m(안테나 포함 시 527m)에 달하는 규모로, 오늘날에도 시카고 스카이라인의 랜드마크다. 윌리스 타워가 건축사에서 중요한 이유는 당시로선 혁신적이었던 '묶음 튜브(Bundled Tube)' 구조를 도입했기 때문이다. 건물을 지탱하기 위해 9개의 직사각형 튜브를 묶어 올린 형태로 설계되었는데, 이는 강한 바람이 부는 시카고의 풍압을 견디기에 최적화된 방식이었다. 높이가 올라갈수록 튜브의 개수가 줄어들며 층이 생기는 독특한 계단식 외관은 이 빌딩의 특징이다.

The Willis Tower, built as and still commonly referred to as the Sears Tower, is a 110-story, 1,450-foot (442.1 m) skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois. At completion in 1973, it surpassed the World Trade Center towers in New York to become the tallest building in the world, a title it held for nearly 25 years; it remained the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere until the completion of a new building at the World Trade Center site in 2014.
