아비뇽 역사 지구

프랑스 남부에 있는 아비뇽 시는 14세기에 로마 교황의 거처였다. 시몬 마르티니와 마테오 조반네티가 화려하게 장식한 아비뇽 교황청은 난공불락의 요새로, 아비뇽 시와 시를 둘러싼 성벽, 12세기에 만든 론 강의 다리 유적을 내려다보고 있다. 이 뛰어난 고딕 건축물 아래에는 프티팔레와 로마네스크 양식의 노트르담 데 돔 성당이 자리 잡고 있다. 이곳의 유적들은 모두 아비뇽이 14세기 유럽의 그리스도교의 중심지로서 번영을 누렸음을 보여 준다.

Palais des Papes

The Palais des Papes is a historical palace located in Avignon, southern France. It is one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Once a fortress and palace, the papal residence was the seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century.

아비뇽 유수 (1309년~1377년)

아비뇽 교황청 아비뇽 유수는 기독교 역사상 14세기에 로마 교황청의 자리가 로마에서 아비뇽으로 옮겨 1309년부터 1377년까지 머무른 시기를 말한다. 고대 유대인의 바빌론 유수에 빗대어 쓰인 표현이다.

Avignon Papacy

The Avignon Papacy was the period from 1309 to 1376 during which seven successive popes resided in Avignon rather than in Rome. The situation arose from the conflict between the papacy and the French crown, culminating in the death of Pope Boniface VIII after his arrest and maltreatment by Philip IV of France.
