곰베국립공원

탄자니아 서부 탕가니카 호숫가에 위치한 곰베 국립공원은 세계적인 영장류학자 제인 구달 박사의 연구지로 전 세계에 알려진 특별한 곳이다. 1960년 제인 구달 박사가 이곳에서 연구를 시작한 이래 세계에서 가장 오랫동안 야생 침팬지를 연구해 온 '살아있는 실험실'이다. 침팬지가 도구를 사용하고 육식을 하며 복잡한 사회적 감정을 가진 존재라는 사실이 바로 이곳에서 처음 밝혀졌다.

Gombe National Park

Gombe National Park is located in western Kigoma Region, Tanzania, 20 km north of Kigoma, the capital of Kigoma Region. Established in 1968, Gombe is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania, with only 35 k㎡ of protected land along the hills of the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The terrain is distinguished by steep valleys, and the forest vegetation ranges from grassland to woodland to tropical rainforest. Accessible only by boat, the park is most famous as the location where Jane Goodall pioneered her behavioral research conducted on the chimpanzee populations. The Kasekela chimpanzee community, featured in several books and documentaries, lives in Gombe National Park.
