트룰리

트룰리는 마치 동화 속 요정들이 살 것 같은 독특한 모양의 전통 가옥으로 1996년 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정되었다. 회색 석회암 판을 접착제 없이 겹겹이 쌓아 올리고 석회 가루를 발라 눈부시게 하얀 벽면은 지붕의 회색과 대비되어 강렬하고 아름다운 인상을 준다. 지붕 위에는 하트, 태양, 십자가 등 신비로운 전통 문양이 그려져 있는데, 이는 재앙을 막고 복을 비는 종교적·주술적 의미를 담고 있다. 트룰리의 독특한 구조는 17세기경 이 지역의 영주가 나폴리 왕국에 내야 하는 주택 세금을 피하기 위해 주민들에게 "쉽게 허물 수 있는 집"을 짓도록 명령했기 때문이다. 세금 조사관이 오면 지붕의 핵심 돌 하나를 빼서 집을 순식간에 무너뜨려 "사람이 살지 않는 폐허"처럼 보이게 했고, 조사관이 떠나면 다시 돌을 쌓아 집을 만들었다고 한다.

Trullo

A trullo is a traditional Apulian dry stone hut with a conical roof. Their style of construction is specific to the Itria Valley, in the Murge area of the Italian region of Apulia. Trulli generally were constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or, as permanent dwellings by small proprietors or agricultural labourers. In the town of Alberobello, in the province of Bari, whole districts contain dense concentrations of trulli. The golden age of trulli was the nineteenth century, especially its final decades, which were marked by the development of wine growing.
