디오니소스 극장

기원전 6세기에 만들어진 인류 최초의 극장. 또한 연극이 인류 최초로 만들어진 곳이다. 이후 그리스 문화의 핵심적인 상징이 되었으며, 콜로세움을 비롯한 후대의 원형 극장들도 모두 이 건축물을 발전시킨 형태이기 때문에 역사적 가치가 매우 크다. 지금은 훼손이 많이 진행되었으나, 석조 건축물이기 때문에 남아있는 부분도 많이 있다. 당시에는 약 17000명을 수용 가능한 규모였다. 기원전 고대 그리스의 아테네 인구는 약 15만명으로 추산되기 때문에, 당시로서는 도시의 1/10을 수용 가능한 어마어마한 수준이다.

Theatre of Dionysus

The Theatre of Dionysus is an ancient Greek theatre in Athens. It is built on the south slope of the Acropolis hill, originally part of the sanctuary of Dionysus Eleuthereus. The first orchestra terrace was constructed on the site around the mid- to late-sixth century BC, where it hosted the City Dionysia.
