2008년 하계 올림픽

1988년 하계 올림픽 이후로는 20년 만에 아시아에서 개최된 대회이기도 하며, 1964년 하계 올림픽, 1988년 하계 올림픽 이후 세 번째로 20년만에 아시아에서 열리는 대회이기도 하다. 2008년 하계 올림픽에서는 NOCs에 소속된 205개 국가 중 브루나이를 제외한 204개 국가가 참여했다. 중국과 미국은 각각 639명과 596명으로 구성된 거대한 팀을 이끌고 대회에 참가하였고 중국은 금메달의 수에서, 미국의 36개를 넘어서는 51개를 획득하여, 각국별 금메달 획득 수에서 처음으로 1위가 되었다.

2008 Summer Olympics

A total of 10,942 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 28 sports and 302 events (one event more than those scheduled for the 2004 Games). This was the first time that China had hosted the Summer Olympics, but the third time that the Games had been held in East Asia, following the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, and the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
