천왕봉

지리산은 금강산, 한라산과 더불어 삼신산(三神山)의 하나로 알려져 왔으며, 신라 5악중 남악으로 ''어리석은 사람(愚者)이 머물면 지혜로운 사람(智者)으로 달라진다 해서 지리산(智異山)''이라 불리워 왔다. 지리산은 백두산의 맥이 반도를 타고 내려와 이 곳까지 이어졌다는 뜻에서 두류산(頭流山)이라고 불리워지기도 하고, 불가(佛家)에서 깨달음을 얻은 높은 스님의 처소를 가리키는 ''방장''의 그 깊은 의미를 빌어 방장산(方丈山)이라고도 하였다.

Along with Geumgansan Mountain and Hallasan Mountain, Jirisan Mountain is known to be one of the most sacred mountains in Korea. It was named ‘Jiri’ because it was believed to be a place that turns the innocent into the wise. Jirisan Mountain, located in the south, is one of the five mountain peaks that surround the capital of old Shilla, On December 29, 1957 Jirisan National Park was declared the nation’s first and biggest national park.
