정몽주 (1337-1392)

고려의 충신으로 문신·외교관이자, 정치가·교육자·유학자이다. 정몽주는 고려 말기 무신 세력의 몰락과 함께 세를 얻어가던 신진 사대부 세력의 지도자 중 한 명이었다. 고려에 새로 도입된 성리학을 연구하고 보급하는 학자 관료들의 지도자로서 높은 학식으로도 존경을 얻고 있었다. 무력을 바탕으로 부패한 고려 조정을 뒤엎으려 한 이성계와 손잡고 고려 말 정치를 좌지우지하였으나 고려 사회의 체제를 지키려 한 정몽주와 역성혁명을 도모하던 이성계는 궁극적인 목표가 서로 달라 결국은 사이가 틀어졌고 그것이 곧 정몽주의 처형으로 이어졌다는 시각이 있다.

Jeong Mongju (1337-1392)

Jeong Mong-ju was born in Yeongcheon, Gyeongsang province to a family from the Yeonil Jeong clan. At the age of 23, he took three different civil service literary examinations (gwageo) and received the highest marks possible on each of them.[2] In 1367, he became an instructor in Neo-Confucianism at the Gukjagam, then called Songgyungwan, whilst simultaneously holding a government position, and was a faithful public servant to King U.
