에이브러햄 링컨 (1809-1865)

켄터키의 거친 황무지 위 통나무집에서 태어난 그는 가난 때문에 정규 교육을 거의 받지 못했지만 등불 아래에서 책이 닳도록 읽으며 스스로 지식을 깨우쳤다. 1860년 노예제 반대를 기치로 내걸고 대통령에 당선되었지만 남부 주들이 연방을 탈퇴하며 남북전쟁이 일어났다. 그는 전쟁이라는 비극 속에서도 결코 포기하지 않았으며, 게티즈버그에서의 연설로 민주주의 역사에 영원히 남을 이정표를 세웠다. "국민의, 국민에 의한, 국민을 위한 정부"라는 그의 선언은 민주주의가 지향해야 할 본질이 무엇인지를 정의했다. 전쟁이 북부의 승리로 끝나고 재건의 희망이 보이던 1865년 4월, 그는 워싱턴 D.C.의 포드 극장에서 암살범의 총탄에 쓰러졌다.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

Abraham Lincoln was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through the American Civil War—its bloodiest war and perhaps its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

에이브러햄 링컨 대통령 도서관·박물관

미국 일리노이 주 스프링필드(Springfield) 6번로에 있는 링컨 대통령 기념 도서관 및 박물관. 미국 제 16대 대통령인 아브라함 링컨을 기리기 위해 2005년에 개관하였다.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum documents the life of the 16th U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln, and the course of the American Civil War. Combining traditional scholarship with 21st-century showmanship techniques, the museum ranks as one of the most visited presidential libraries. Its library, in addition to housing an extensive collection on Lincoln, also houses the collection of the Illinois State Historical Library, founded by the state in 1889.
