에이브러햄 링컨 (1809-1865)

에이브러햄 링컨은 1861년 3월부터 암살된 1865년 4월까지 미국의 16번째 대통령으로 재직했다. 그는 남북전쟁이라는 거대한 내부적 위기로부터 나라를 이끌어 벗어나게 하는 데 성공하여 연방을 보존하였고, 노예제를 끝냈다. 그는 당시 미 북서부 변방 개척지에 사는 가난한 가정 출신이었기 때문에, 그는 공부를 학교에서 배우기 보다는 혼자서 스스로 할 수밖에 없었다. 이후 그는 변호사가 되었으며, 일리노이주 의원이 되었고, 미국 하원의원을 한 번 했지만, 상원 의원 선거에서는 두 번 실패하였다. 그는 가족과 함께 시간을 많이 보내지는 못했지만, 자상한 남편이었고 네 아이의 아버지였다.

Abraham Lincoln was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through the American Civil War—its bloodiest war and perhaps its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

에이브러햄 링컨 대통령 도서관·박물관

미국 일리노이 주 스프링필드(Springfield) 6번로에 있는 링컨 대통령 기념 도서관 및 박물관. 미국 제 16대 대통령인 아브라함 링컨을 기리기 위해 2005년에 개관하였다.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum documents the life of the 16th U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln, and the course of the American Civil War. Combining traditional scholarship with 21st-century showmanship techniques, the museum ranks as one of the most visited presidential libraries. Its library, in addition to housing an extensive collection on Lincoln, also houses the collection of the Illinois State Historical Library, founded by the state in 1889.
