로데오

로데오는 과거 스페인과 멕시코의 카우보이 문화에서 유래했다. 목장에서 가축을 돌보던 기술들이 서로의 기량을 겨루는 경기로 발전한 것인데, 오늘날 텍사스에서는 단순한 스포츠를 넘어 거대한 문화 축제로 자리 잡았다. 로데오의 꽃이라 불리는 종목은 불 라이딩(Bull Riding)으로 사나운 황소 등에 올라타 한 손만으로 8초 동안 버텨야 하는데 가장 위험하면서도 관객들을 가장 열광하게 만드는 경기다. 텍사스에는 연중 수많은 로데오가 열리지만, 그중 압권은 매년 봄에 열리는 휴스턴 로데오다. 세계 최대 규모의 가축 쇼이자 로데오 대회로, 매년 200만 명 이상의 방문객이 찾는다.

Rodeo

Rodeo is a competitive sport that arose out of the working practices of cattle herding in Spain, Mexico, and later Central America, South America, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It was based on the skills required of the working vaqueros and later, cowboys, in what today is the western United States, western Canada, and northern Mexico.
