야쿠시마

야쿠시마는 규슈 가고시마현 남단에 위치한 섬으로, 1993년 일본 최초로 유네스코 세계자연유산에 등재되었을 만큼 태고의 신비를 고스란히 간직한 '생명의 섬'이다. '한 달에 35일 동안 비가 내린다'는 말이 전해질 정도로 엄청난 강수량을 자랑하며, 이 풍부한 비와 습기는 섬 전체를 짙푸른 이끼와 거대한 삼나무들이 어우러진 신비로운 생태계로 만들어 냈다. 이 섬을 상징하는 가장 큰 존재는 수령이 천 년을 넘는 거대한 삼나무인 '야쿠스기'인데 그중에서도 가장 오래된 것으로 알려진 '조몬스기'는 수령이 적게는 2천 년에서 많게는 7천 년까지 추정된다. 조몬스기를 만나러 가는 길은 왕복 10시간이 넘는 고된 트레킹 코스임에도 불구하고, 전 세계의 수많은 여행자가 그 영적인 기운을 느끼기 위해 이곳을 찾는다. 특히 야쿠시마의 '시라타니 운스이쿄' 숲은 스튜디오 지브리의 애니메이션 "원령공주" 속 사슴신의 숲에 영감을 준 장소로 널리 알려져 있다. 숲길을 걷다 보면 야생 사슴인 '야쿠시카'와 원숭이 '야쿠자루'가 길 위에서 평화롭게 노니는 모습을 마주하게 되는데, 이는 인간의 손길이 닿지 않은 자연 그대로의 풍경을 잘 보여준다.

Yakushima

In 1980 an area of 18,958 ha was designated a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve. In 1993, 10 hectares of wetland at Nagata-hama was designated a Ramsar Site.It is the largest nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle in the North Pacific. Yakushima's unique remnant of warm/temperate ancient forest has been a natural World Heritage Site since 1993. In the Wilderness core area of the World Heritage Site, no record of past tree cutting can be traced. The island is visited by 300,000 tourists every year.

조몬 삼나무

조몬 삼나무는 가고시마현 구마게 군 야쿠시마 정 (야쿠 섬)에 자생하는 최대의 야쿠 삼나무이다. 야쿠 삼나무를 대표하는 고목으로 유명하다. 수령 최소 2,170여년에서 발견 당시 최대 7,200여년으로 추정되었으며, 이름은 일본의 신석기 시대인 조몬 시대로부터 살기 시작했을 것으로 추정되기 때문이다.

Jōmon Sugi

Jōmon Sugi is a large Cryptomeria tree (yakusugi) located on Yakushima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Japan. It is the oldest and largest among the old-growth cryptomeria trees on the island, and is estimated to be between 2,170 and 7,200 years old. Other estimates of the tree's age include "at least 5,000 years", "more than 6,000 years", and "up to 7,000 years old". The tree's name is a reference to the Jōmon period of Japanese prehistory.
