말펠로 동식물 보호 구역

말펠로섬은 콜롬비아 서쪽 태평양에 위치한 화산섬으로, 험준한 절벽과 암석 지형으로 이루어진 무인도이다. 섬과 주변 해역은 세계적으로 뛰어난 해양 생물다양성을 자랑하며, 특히 귀상어와 고래상어, 참치, 가오리 등 대형 해양생물이 서식하는 중요한 생태계로 알려져 있다. 또한 수많은 바닷새의 번식지이자 희귀 해양생물의 서식지로서 높은 생태학적 가치를 지니고 있으며, 세계 최고의 스쿠버다이빙 명소 가운데 하나로도 손꼽힌다. 이러한 자연환경을 보호하기 위해 섬과 주변 해역은 말펠로 동식물 보호구역​으로 지정되어 관리되고 있다. 뛰어난 생물다양성과 보전 가치를 인정받아 말펠로 동식물 보호구역은 2006년 유네스코 세계자연유산에 등재되었으며, 동태평양 해양 생태계를 대표하는 중요한 자연유산이다.

Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary

Located some 506 km off the coast of Colombia, the site includes Malpelo island (350 ha) and the surrounding marine environment (857,150 ha). This vast marine park, the largest no-fishing zone in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, provides a critical habitat for internationally threatened marine species, and is a major source of nutrients resulting in large aggregations of marine biodiversity.
