자크 오펜바흐 (1819-1880)

자크 오펜바흐는 독일 태생의 프랑스 작곡가이자 첼리스트이다. 어릴 때 파리에 와서 첼로를 공부하였다. 그는 프랑스 극장의 지휘자가 되어 경쾌하고 재미있는 오페라를 많이 발표하여 '프랑스 오페레타의 창시자'라고 불린다. 작품으로 <호프만의 이야기> <천국과 지옥> 등 100여 편이 있다. 근대 뮤지컬 코메디의 전신인 오페레타 형식의 선구자 중 한 명이다.

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880)

Jacques Offenbach was a German-born French composer, cellist and impresario of the romantic period. He is remembered for his nearly 100 operettas of the 1850s–1870s and his uncompleted opera The Tales of Hoffmann. He was a powerful influence on later composers of the operetta genre, particularly Johann Strauss, Jr. and Arthur Sullivan.
