술탄 아흐메트 모스크
블루 모스크의 정식 명칭은 술탄 아흐메트 모스크(Sultan Ahmed Mosque)로 아야 소피아와 마주 보고 서있는 이스탄불의 대표적인 이슬람 사원으로 17세기 초 오스만 제국의 술탄 아흐메트 1세가 아야 소피아의 웅장함에 대항하고 제국의 위엄을 세우기 위해 건설했다. 당시 성스러운 메카의 모스크와 같은 수인 6개의 첨탑(미나레트)을 세워 큰 논란이 되기도 했다. 블루 모스크라는 이름은 사원 내부 벽면을 장식한 2만 장 이상의 푸른색 이즈니크 타일에서 비롯되었다. 내부 공간은 260개가 넘는 창문을 통해 들어오는 빛이 이 타일에 반사되어 내부가 신비로운 푸른빛으로 가득 차고 기하학적 문양이 어우러져 장엄하면서도 평온한 분위기를 자아낸다.
