산티아고 순례길

이 길의 기원은 9세기경 예수의 12사도 중 한 명인 성 야고보(Santiago)의 유해가 스페인 북서부 갈리시아 지방에서 발견되면서 시작되었다. 중세 시대에 산티아고 순례길은 로마와 예루살렘과 함께 기독교 3대 순례지로 꼽히며 순례자들은 신앙적 구원과 참회를 목적으로 수백에서 수천 킬로미터에 이르는 길을 걸었다. 그 과정에서 도시와 수도원, 다리와 병원이 형성되며 유럽 문화 교류의 중요한 통로 역할을 했다. 한때 잊혔던 이 길은 1982년 교황 요한 바오로 2세의 방문과 파울로 코엘료의 소설 <순례자> 등을 통해 현대인들에게 '자아를 찾는 치유의 길'로 다시 사랑받게 되었다.

Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago known in English as the Way of Saint James among other names, is a network of pilgrims' ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried.
