장릉

장릉은 조선 6대 단종의 능이다. 단종이 1457년(세조 3) 노산군(魯山君)의 신분으로 세상을 떠나자, 영월호장 엄흥도(嚴興道)가 단종의 시신을 몰래 거두어 현재의 자리에 가매장하였다. 이후 1516년(중종 11) 묘를 찾아 봉분을 만들었고, 1580년(선조 13)에 석물을 세운 후 제사를 지냈다. 1698년(숙종 24) 단종으로 왕의 신분이 회복되어 능의 이름을 장릉이라 하고, 현재의 모습으로 다시 조성하였다.

Jangneung

Jangneung is the tomb of Danjong, the 6th king of the Joseon Dynasty (r. 1441-1457). After having the throne taken away by Suyang Daegun, his uncle, Danjong was condemned to exile in Yeongwol County, where he was later murdered and his remains were abandoned in the Dongang River. When no one else was brave enough to find his body, Eom Heung-do, the governor of Yeongwol Lake, found his body and buried him in the tomb that later became Jangneung, one of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
