샌디에이고 파드리스

팀명인 파드리스(Padres)의 어원인 padre는 스페인어로는 아버지 또는 신부라는 뜻이다. 1769년 스페인 국왕 카를로스 3세가 샌디에이고에 보낸 군대와 가톨릭 교회의 프란치스코회 성직자들에 의하여 샌프란시스코에서 샌디에이고에 이르기까지 세워진 21개의 가톨릭 수도원이 캘리포니아에 처음으로 세워진 역사에서 유래되었다고 한다. 이 때문인지 구단의 마스코트도 정수리를 삭발한 가톨릭 신부이다.
