박지원 (1737-1805)
박지원은 조선 후기의 대표적인 실학자이자 문학가로 당대의 사회 모순을 비판하고 현실 개혁을 강조했다. 실학의 한 갈래인 북학파의 중심 인물로 중국 청나라를 직접 방문해 그들의 발전된 문물과 제도를 관찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 조선의 낙후된 현실을 비판했다. 그 여행의 기록이 바로 유명한 <열하일기(熱河日記)>다. <열하일기>에는 청나라의 발달한 산업, 학문, 교통 체계 등이 생생하게 묘사되어 있으며, 이를 통해 조선이 배워야 할 점을 강조했다. 그는 또한 봉건 사회의 허위와 형식주의를 비판하고, 백성의 삶을 개선해야 한다는 주장을 문학과 글을 통해 표현했다. 그의 소설 <허생전>, <양반전>, <호질> 등은 위선적인 양반 사회를 풍자하며, 신분제의 모순과 불합리를 비판했다.
Bak Jiwon (1737-1805)
Bak Jiwon was a philosopher and novelist in the late Joseon Dynasty. He has been regarded as one of the greatest thinkers of the so-called "Practical Learning" movement. Bak Jiwon belonged to the "School of Profitable Usage and Benefiting the People" to promote the industrialization of his country and the development of trade by positively introducing western technologies to Joseon Korea. Bak Jiwon proposed that Joseon import advanced technologies from the Qing Dynasty, and promote mercantilism

열하일기
열하일기(熱河日記)는 조선 정조 때의 북학파인 박지원이 44세 때인 1780년(정조 4년)에 삼종형(8촌 형) 박명원(朴明源)이 청나라 건륭제의 만수절(萬壽節, 칠순 잔치) 사절로 북경(당시의 연경)에 갈 때 따라가서 보고 들은 것을 남긴 견문기이다.

The Jehol Diary
The Jehol Diary (Yeolha Ilgi) is the work of the Joseon dynasty silhak scholar Bak Jiwon, written in classical Chinese. Bak,, made an extensive tour of what was then the northern territory of the Chinese Qing Empire, including Shenyang, Beijing and Rehe Province, in 1780, in the company of his cousin. Bak's cousin had been dispatched to the Qing imperial court by the Joseon king Jeongjo to attend the 70th birthday celebrations of the Qianlong Emperor.

연암 물레방아공원
함양이 물레방아골이 된 배경에는 조선 후기 실학자 연암 박지원이 있다. 연암은 청나라에 다녀와 '열하일기'를 썼는데, 여기서 물레방아를 소개했다. 이후 1792년경 함양군 안의현감으로 재직할 때 물레방아를 실용화한 것. 물길을 이용한 물레방아는 농업혁명의 시작이었다. 겉으로는 평화로운 시골 정취를 풍기지만, 안을 들여다보면 연암의 실학 정신이 오롯이 담겼다. 함양에서 물레방아가 자주 보이는 것도 이 때문이다. 용추계곡 입구에는 지름 10m, 폭 2m로 거대한 물레방아와 연암 박지원의 동상이 있는 연암물레방아공원이 조성되었다.
