황해해전 (갑오전쟁, 청일전쟁 1894.9.17)

황해해전은 1894년 9월 17일 청나라가 자랑하던 아시아 최대 함대인 북양함대와 신흥 강국 일본 해군이 격돌한 전투다. 한반도에 대한 지배권을 두고 다투던 청나라와 일본이 압록강 인근 황해상에서 마주쳤다. 당시 청나라의 주력함인 '정원'과 '진원'은 독일에서 건조한 거대 장갑함으로, 당시 일본군이 가장 두려워했던 '불침함'이었다. 수치상으로는 청나라가 유리해 보였으나, 실전 훈련 부족과 부패로 인한 불량 포탄 문제 등으로 인해 일본의 현대화된 함대에 대패했다. 이 패배로 청나라는 해상 제권을 완전히 잃었고, 청나라의 위신은 땅으로 떨어졌습니다. 결국 시모노세키 조약으로 이어져 요동반도와 타이완을 일본에 넘겨주게 된다.

Battle of the Yalu River (1894.9.17)

The Battle of the Yalu River was the largest naval engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War, and took place on 17 September 1894, the day after the Japanese victory at the land Battle of Pyongyang. It involved ships from the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Chinese Beiyang Fleet. The battle is also known by a variety of names: Battle of Haiyang Island, Battle of Dadonggou, Battle of the Yellow Sea and Battle of Yalu, after the geographic location of the battle, which was in the Yellow Sea off the mouth of the Yalu River and not in the river itself.
