신재효 (1812-1884)

신재효는 1812년 전라북도 고창에서 태어나 조선 후기 향리 가정에서 자랐고, 평생 판소리를 정리해 문서화, 체계화했다. 원래 구전되던 판소리 여러 마당 가운데 6편 (춘향가, 심청가, 적벽가, 수궁가, 흥보가, 변강쇠가)을 골라 정리하고 다듬었고 이후 판소리 전통의 중심 레퍼토리로 자리 잡았다. 그는 자신의 집을 동리정사라는 예술 교육 공간으로 만들어, 전국의 뛰어난 소리꾼들을 불러 모아 숙식을 제공하고 판소리 교육과 연구를 지원했다. 또, 진채선, 김세종 등 당대의 명창들을 키워냈으며, 특히 진채선은 조선 최초의 여성 명창으로 알려져 있다. 그의 활동 덕분에 판소리는 단순한 구전 문화가 아닌 문학과 음악이 결합된 종합 예술로 발전할 수 있었으며, 이는 오늘날 판소리가 유네스코 인류무형문화유산으로 인정받는 중요한 토대가 되었다.

Shin Jaehyo (1812-1884)

Shin Jaehyo was a theoretician and adapter of pansori in the late Joseon Dynasty. While not a famous singer of pansori, he contributed much to its development. He organized and recorded the six stories of pansori: Chunhyangga, Simcheongga, Jeokbyeokga, Heungbuga, Sugungga, and Byunggang Saega. Before this, they had only been transmitted orally. He also systematized a theory of pansori. He was born in 1812 in Gochang, Jeolla-do. Having studied Chinese classics, he had a good knowledge about its philosophical works, including the Seven Chinese Classics: the Four Books and the Three Classics. He opened his home to relatives, gisaeng, singers, and other entertainers, with as many as 50 people living in his house at once.

판소리 박물관

판소리를 중흥시킨 신재효의 공적을 기리기 위해 2001년 개관하였다. 신재효의 유품과 고창 지역의 명창, 판소리 자료 등 총 1,480여 점을 전시하고 있다. 전시실은 소리마당과 아니리마당 등 5개 공간으로 구성된다. 이중 소리마당에는 판소리의 기원과 판소리 시연 모형, 판소리 계보 등이 전시되어 있고, 아니리마당은 고창군 소개와 신재효·진채선·김소희 등 이 지역 출신 명창들을 소개하고 있다. 가사 집과 국악 관련의 음반·서적 등 희귀한 전시물도 많다.

Pansori Museum

The Gochang Pansori Museum was established in the old residence of ‘Dongni’ Sin Jae-Hyo (a musical theorist and arranger and a sponsor of Pansori) with the aim of honoring the great Pansori singers of the past (including Sin Jae-Hyo) and preserving and developing the indigenous tradition of Pansori. Of the original rooms of the residence only Sarangchae (an annex where men used to study or welcome guests) has been renovated and is open to the public. Right next to Sarangchae is the Dongni Gugakdang (Korean Traditional Music Hall).
